Retiring at 40

Nearly three years ago, in February of 2022, I posted this video:

In the video, I talked about how I wanted to “retire” by the time I was 40 years old.

Well, this month I turned 40 (where did the time go???)… so have I retired? And what does that word even mean to me?

First the word “retire.” For me, this doesn’t mean I just stop working and sit around doing nothing all day. I don’t have it in me to do that. I like being busy with stuff that is fun to work on. For me “retired” means having enough money available that I could stop working for the rest of my life IF I wanted to.

In that video, the number I mentioned was $2.5M invested. With $2.5M, if you earn an average of 8-10% per year on your money, you could withdraw 3-4% each year as a salary and the money would still slowly grow… effectively making it so you never run out of money before you die. Maybe you’ve heard of the “4% Rule.” With that amount, you could pay yourself $75k to $100k a year for life.

Which is pretty cool.

Well, I’m 40 now… did I do it? The answer is YES. Which is pretty exciting, but it’s not the end of the journey for me.

I live and breathe crypto, investing, finance talk, etc. Part of the fun of it is putting it all to work. So while I have hit my target by the time I hoped I would, I’m not done. I’ll keep making more money, investing more money, and pursuing opportunities as long as it is fun and interesting to do.

So why am I emailing you all this? It’s not to brag. There are plenty of other people who are far more successful than me out there.

It’s to show you what’s possible if you haven’t done this yourself yet or if you have never thought in terms of these kinds of goals.

When I was in my 20s and racking up credit debt and generally having ZERO clue about money, I never DREAMED I’d have “retirement” money by the time I was 40 years old.

But along the way, I saw other people doing it and decided I wanted it for myself. So I started very very small and very very slowly and here I am today.

So, if that’s you… start now. Do not wait. Do not put it off again.

It’s about to be 2025. You will have a clean start on January 1st. Use it.

Come up with a goal. Make a plan. And kick some ass.

It will not be easy or quick, but it IS doable.

And given that we are embarking on the next great crypto bull run, you could use that to REALLY kickstart this journey.
